A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” is a fast-paced, comedic musical set in ancient Rome. The story follows Pseudolus, a witty and cunning slave, who dreams of earning his freedom. When his young master, Hero, falls in love with a beautiful courtesan named Philia, Pseudolus sees an opportunity: if he can help Hero win Philia’s heart, Hero will grant him his freedom.
However, complications arise as Philia is promised to the egotistical Roman soldier, Miles Gloriosus, and various schemes quickly spiral out of control. The plot is filled with mistaken identities, outrageous characters, and slapstick humor.
The musical draws inspiration from the farcical tradition of ancient Roman playwright Plautus and features a lively score by Stephen Sondheim, including the famous opening number “Comedy Tonight.”
The show is a joyful, chaotic romp, combining clever wordplay, physical comedy, and musical wit.
A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI).
