Evelyn Reid, a New York public school teacher accused of improper conduct by a student. Sent to a “rubber room”—a Department of Education reassignment center—Evelyn joins five other suspended educators awaiting hearings. Over the course of a school year, they form an unlikely alliance, sharing stories, learning French, and even workshopping a screenplay. Through their interactions, they confront personal and professional challenges, leading to unexpected transformations.

The play delves into themes of bureaucracy, justice, and the complexities of the education system. It portrays a diverse group of characters, each with their own backgrounds and reasons for being in the reassignment center. Their shared experiences and evolving relationships provide both humor and insight into the pressures faced by educators.

Where absurd rules collide with real human struggles. Evelyn in Purgatory is a witty, darkly comic play exploring friendship, bureaucracy, and the unexpected lessons of life.
